CYRCH A CHWTA
WHAT IS CYRCH A CHWTA?
It is a Welsh form of poetry with a fixed number of lines and syllables per line. It is written as an octave (8 line stanza) where lines 1-6 and 8 have an end rhyme. Line 7 rhymes with line 8 internally (or cross rhyme) on syllables 3,4 or 5. Remembering this rhyme scheme is very important since it is what that defines the poem. Also remember, each line has 7 syllables only.
EXAMPLE OF CYRCH A CHWTA:
MY TREE
~Charles L. Weatherford
My dad went to war, but he
took time first to plant a tree
when I was a baby, wee.
Dad never came back to me,
he perished when I was three.
I learned of him at mom’s knee
That tree gave shade, let me swing.
That’s something dad knew would be.

TIPS TO WRITE A CYRCH A CHWTA:
Since 7 out of 8 lines rhyme, be careful and choose the first rhyme properly so that there are plenty of rhymes for you to use.
Make sure that you have the internal rhyme on line 7 on the syllables 3,4, or 5 only.
Do not go overboard with the rhyme and make it too forced since that would disrupt the flow of the poem.
Have a nice title and an ending that makes an impact.
Now that you know all about this beautiful form of Welsh poetry, go pen one now!
