What does the word "quatern" remind you of? Yes, obviously it reminds us of the number four. Yes you guessed it right, it has four stanzas and each stanza is a quatrain . A quatrain is nothing but a stanza or complete poem with 4 lines. Then each line has 8 syllables. Also quartrain has a refrain. A refrain is nothing but a repititive line. It goes like this 1st line of 1st stanza is repeated again in 2nd line of second stanza, 3rd line of 3rd stanza and 4th line of 4th stanza. Still confused? Let's see this example.
True Love, Redefined
One day she hopes true love to find, ( refrain)
One soul, one mind, two hearts entwined;
Somewhere out there’s the perfect guy,
For Youth has set her standards high.
One soul, one mind, two hearts entwined;
Somewhere out there’s the perfect guy,
For Youth has set her standards high.
He must be rich, handsome, refined,
One day she hopes true love to find; (refrain)
Yet no one seems to measure up
And disappointment fills her cup.
One day she hopes true love to find; (refrain)
Yet no one seems to measure up
And disappointment fills her cup.
The years go by, her nights grow long,
Her aging voice sings sorrow’s song.
One day she hopes true love to find,(refrain)
Her definition redefined;
Her aging voice sings sorrow’s song.
One day she hopes true love to find,(refrain)
Her definition redefined;
Simply a plain and faithful friend
To see her to life’s journey’s end;
For though her face with age be lined,
One day she hopes true love to find. (refrain)
To see her to life’s journey’s end;
For though her face with age be lined,
One day she hopes true love to find. (refrain)
