MONDO

 MONDO

WHAT IS A MONDO?

A Mondo is a poem written in questions and answer format. It can be one liner, or in two stanzas written with syllable count as 5-7-7 in each line. The most important thing is to have a question and an answer in direct speech. Do not use indirect speech. A Mondo is a very fun form to experiment with, since the question can be serious or fun. If the Mondo is of two stanzas, the first stanza would be the question and the second would be the answer to that question.

EXAMPLE OF MONDO:

CLOUDED SILHOUETTE

                                                   ~Avaanthikha Narayan

O, my sweetest one

Why do you look beautiful

To my eyes clouded by pain?

I don’t hear you laugh

Nor do I get to see your smile

Silhouette of pain, is my love.

The above poem is a Mondo poem in two stanzas with each stanza’s syllable count being 5-7-7. The first stanza presents a question and the second presents an answer to that.

EMPTY

                                       ~Avaanthikha Narayan

Why is the bottle empty? Water has drained out.

This is a Mondo poem in a single line with both the question and answer in the same line.
