WHAT IS A MINUTE POEM?

Here is a question for you, how many seconds does a minute have? In case you said 60, you are right! A minute poem has 60 syllables totally in the poem. It is a relatively new form of poetry but is very simple and easy to write. 

It has 3 stanzas with 4 lines each. The first line of each stanza must have 8 syllables. The other three lines have 4 syllables in them. So do the maths… Three lines have 8 syllables, that is 24 syllables and the other 9 lines have 4 syllables each which is 36 syllables. Adding them gives 60 syllables in the whole poem. It follows the iambic meter strictly. For those of you who do not know what iambic meter is, it is the meter which follows an iamb. An iamb in poetry, is the collective name for two consecutive syllables in which the first is unstressed and the next one is stressed: duh-DUH. Iambic meter is when the line in a poem follows an iamb. Iambic pentameter is when there are 5 iambs in a line, iambic dimeter is when there are 2 iambs in a line and so on. 

Minute poem also follows a strict rhyme scheme as aabb/ccdd/eeff. This rhyme scheme is very popular and easy to follow too.

I Need Someone

I need someone to hold me tight

Through dark of night,

Who won’t go ’way

At break of day.

Someone whose love will mend the seams

Of broken dreams,

And give me back

The trust I lack.

For love, it holds the magic key

To set me free,

To heal my soul

And make me whole.

TIPS TO WRITE A MINUTE POEM:

1. Do not try writing the poem in minutes, take your time. It follows a meter and is thus a form that should be perfect.

2. The rhyme scheme is very easy to follow and to remember. You can use poetic devices and rhymes that are not forced at all.

3. The syllable count, the meter, rhyme scheme all work together to produce a masterpiece and it is in your hands to make it most beautiful.
