HIR a THODDAID

WHAT IS HIR a THODDAID ??

Just like the Byr a Thoddaid , it too is an Welshtic poetry form . Each of its stanzas contains six lines and there’s no restriction on number of stanzas . Every line contains nine syllables except the fifth one . The fifth line contains ten syllables and is cross rhymed with the sixth line whereas all the other lines are monorhymed .

FORMAT OF HIR a THODDAID :

1-xxxxxxxxa

2-xxxxxxxxa

3-xxxxxxxxa

4-xxxxxxxxa

5-xxxxxxxbxx

6-xxbxxxxxa

The fifth line contains ten syllables and also the b rhyme comes in the beginning of sixth line but that can change according to your needs .

EXAMPLE OF HIR a THODDAID :

 Ace,

by Robert Lee Brewer

This is the year I really need space

to figure myself out and save face

from those who are always on my case

about how I don't know how to grace

a room without dominating the scene

while demonstrating my sense of place

TIPS FOR WRITTING HIR a THODDAID :

● It may seem complicated but surprisingly its easy if we take care of some things .

● Firstly its a six line stanza poem and although normally written in only one  stanza there is no restriction on number of stanzas .

● Secondly , its a  monorhymed poetry form .

● Every line expect the fifth one . This line cross rhymes with the sixth line but do not forget that the sixth line also is mono rhymed .

● And then the fifth line contains ten syllables but every other one contains nine syllables .

So if we keep a few key facts in our mind while writing it , it can be really a piece of cake !!  The fact that the sixth line cross rhymes with the fifth one and is also monorhymed is interesting and challenging . So in my opinion its a cool poetry form with a cool name .... don't you think so??
