 CLOGYRNACH

What is a Clogyrnach?

Clogyrnach is a form of Welsh poetry which contains 32 syllables in a 6-line stanza. This poem can give itself easily a light verse but can also be inspired with some serious themes. It can also be made longer by adding more stanzas but mostly single stanza ones are much appreciated.

How to write a Clogyrnach Poem?

As mentioned it contains 32 syllables in a 6 line stanza.

-The 32 syllables are split as:

Line 1: 8 syllables

Line 2: 8 syllables

Line 3: 5 syllables

Line 4: 5 syllables

Line 5: 3 syllables

Line 6: 3 syllables

-This follows a specific rhyme pattern which is a a b b b a, which is something like:

x x x x x x x a

x x x x x x x a

x x x x b

x x x x b

x x b

x x a

-We can make use of enjambment in the last 2 lines and make that as:

x x x x x x x a

x x x x x x x a

x x x x b

x x x x b

x x b x x a

And make it as a 5 liner.

It Is No Use To Blame The Looking Glass If Your Face Is Awry

                         -Nikolai Gogol

O Mirror, Mirror on the wall,

I do not like your view at all.

You say there’s no trace

of a pretty face?!

Way off base…

I’m fair, y’all.
