DESCORT

DESCORT

WHAT IS A DESCORT?

A Descort poem is a medieval lyric in which the stanzas or lines are non uniform. Meaning, each line is different and has no connection to one another. Descort means quarrel or discord and thus the name. Sources claim that the inventor of Descort was Garin d'Apchier. The descort is made of stanzas with a variable number of lines, and of lines with a variable number of syllables. The rhymes of a descort are usually used within a single stanza and then discarded.

HOW TO WRITE A DESCORT?

Writing a Descort is really simple since the lines are in discord with each other and do not have a fixed rhyme scheme. A Descort poem has varying line lengths, meters, rhymes, no refrains and the same could be said for stanzas too.

When you requite tips on writing a Descort, keep nothing in mind and try not to rhyme, not to have a meter and everything else that you would try to have in other poetic forms. This might seem easy, but is not so. When poets write poems, lines tend to rhyme or have a fixed meter unconsciously. So just remember to consciously not rhyme, not have a meter and using refrains is a big no no.

EXAMPLE OF DESCORT:

MAJESTICALLY ALONE

~Avaanthikha Narayan

A round cauliflower rolls to me and I catch it

A large hill with a coconut tree

Standing utop

With a majestic demeanour

Tall

All alone.

As mentioned, each line is different from all other lines structurally. There is no refrain, no meter, no rhyme, at all. Each line has a different syllable count and is totally unique. Other Descort poems have more than one stanza, again following the rule of uniqueness. Start penning chaos, and you will get an ordered Descort. Happy writing
