WHAT IS AN AWDL GYWYDD?
An awdl gywydd is a poem comprising four- line stanzas and each stanza having 7 syllables. Originated from the Welsh culture, this style of poetry has touched the hearts of poets all over the world. Pronounced as 'ow-dull gee-youth', this style of poetry uses the sense of sound by using various literary devices, the most important one being rhythm. Due to this trait, awdl gywydd poems are easy to memorize.
FORMAT OF AN AWDL GYWYDD:
Awdl Gywydd has quatrain stanzas with each line comprising 7 syllables. The second and the fourth lines rhyme and the final words of the first and the third lines rhyme with the 3rd or 5th words of the following lines. The syllable structure of an awdl gywydd looks as follows (the position of a and c in the second and the fourth lines may vary):
xxxxxxa
xxaxxxb
xxxxxxc
xxxxcxb
An example of this style of poetry is 'Love is such a heady drink' by Terry Clitheroe.
" Love is such a heady drink
I do not think we are meant
To imbibe and also touch
Desiring so much it's sweet scent.
Dreaming throughout each long day
To find a way to spend each night.
Thus our plans given by Fate
Ending with the mate that's right."
(by Terry Clitheroe)
